As the temperature drops ever so slightly here in Savannah, more and more people take advantage of being outdoors. The City of Savannah‘s Department of Cultural Affairs joins with the Savannah Philharmonic every year to present “Picnic in the Park.” This event is always held on the first Sunday of October, which means that it will be this Sunday, October 8th. In addition to the Savannah Philharmonic, local high school bands will be performing, as well as the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division Color Guard.
The event takes place in Savannah’s famed Forsyth Park, and the event is scheduled from 3:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Many people will arrive before 3:30 p.m. to stake out a spot and set up. Every year a theme is selected, and those who choose can participate in a picnic contest based on the theme. This year, the theme is “Lights. Camera. Music,” and is evocative of the music associated with Hollywood. Some people will have tents with chandeliers, ice sculptures, and catered dishes. Most of these people will make sure to decorate in accordance with the theme, and some will even wear costumes. Others will take the simpler route and grab a snack from nearby Kroger and spread out a blanket.
While it’s always best to be prepared, there is no shortage of nearby shops to grab last-minute picnic essentials. Both Kroger and Parker’s are just a few blocks away, and local favorites The Sentient Bean, Le Chai Wine Gallery and Brighter Day Market are located at the north end of the Park.
This is an event that is looked forward to by locals all year, as it’s a great way to enjoy the beauty and community spirit that is truly Savannah. Don’t pass up this opportunity to enjoy good food, good music and a good time in the heart of the Downtown Historic District of Savannah.
