Memphis Born. Savannah Made.
Savannah is on the coast, so of course when people think of local cuisine, they often think of seafood. But Savannah is also in the heart of Dixie, which means that people around here need their barbecue fix. With 2 locations in Savannah, Sandfly BBQ has us covered. The original location is located in the neighborhood of Sandfly. The second and slightly new location is located in Historic Downtown Savannah, in the old Streamliner Diner building.
The owner of Sandfly BBQ, Keith Latture, trained in Memphis. He’s used that knowledge as a base for his menus, which reflect the eclectic flavors of the Lowcountry. The sauces at Sandfly show off Latture’s travels throughout the South. There’s a sweet sauce that pays homage to Latture’s roots in Memphis, a zesty mustard-based sauce that is a nod to Savannah, and a spicy vinegar-based sauce inspired by North Carolina barbecue. All of the meats at Sandfly BBQ, which include offerings of pork, beef and chicken, are traditionally seasoned and smoked over a combination of pecan and hickory.
Of course no barbecue plate of any kind is complete without a delicious side dish, and Sandfly BBQ doesn’t disappoint. The sides are not just “Southern-inspired.” These side dishes taste like what my grandmas used to make. Choose from classics like mac ‘n’ cheese, collard greens, baked beans, Savannah red rice, and potato salad. Of course Sandfly BBQ has homemade desserts such as Coconut Cake, Peach Cobbler and Banana Pudding, and these choices vary on a daily basis. Both locations also offer a wide range of craft beer selections.
Whether you’re looking to dine in, or grab a pound of meat and a quart of sides to enjoy at home, you will enjoy a taste of the South by indulging in what Sandfly BBQ has to offer.
