New Downtown Eatery with Familiar Faces
Saturday mornings in Savannah are perfect for walking. Locals and visitors alike love venturing out on foot to enjoy the sights and sounds of Historic Downtown Savannah. On this particular morning, we decided to pay a visit to Fork and Dagger. Fork and Dagger is one of the newest eateries to open in the Victorian District. The Victorian District is just south of the Historic District, includes Forsyth Park and covers a 50-block area. While this charming area is full of of unique historical homes and shops, new additions are always welcome. Fork and Dagger is no exception. This little gem is tucked away on the first floor of the Chatham Apartments building on Abercorn Street.
I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the many Spanish-influenced dishes that are on Fork and Dagger’s menu. But on this particular morning, I wasn’t looking for a large meal to start the day, since we planned to wander around town and visit the Forsyth Park Farmers Market after the meal. We ordered bagel breakfast sandwiches after listening to owners Sky Hoyt and Brian Torres share some info about their hunt for the perfect bagel. We weren’t disappointed. I got the New Yorker bagel, which was exactly what I was looking for, and a steal at $6. The everything bagel sandwiches slices of smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, tomato, and capers. My husband decided to keep it simple with a Bacon, Egg and Cheese bagel sandwich that was equally delicious. Fork and Dagger gets all of their bagels from a bakery in the Bronx, and it’s obvious — those bagels are amazing.
I exercised some tremendous restraint on my part by only eating my bagel sandwich. I’m especially proud of this because Fork and Dagger features some of the most incredible cheesecake. Brian has been perfecting and selling his New York style cheesecakes for a while now, and they’re a much-beloved treat for Savannahians. With flavors like White Chocolate Hazlenut and Maple Bacon, temptation is nearly impossible to resist. Speaking from past experience, I can confirm that these cheesecakes are as amazing as everything else on the menu.
It was great to see Sky and Brian in their element doing what they love to do. I can’t wait to go back and try their signature dishes such as the Pig ‘n’ Grits. Fork and Dagger is located 609 1/2 Abercorn St and open Monday through Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. I can tell it’s going to become a favorite Saturday-morning stop for us.
Also New to the Neighborhood
The Victorian Market has also recently opened just down the street at Abercorn and Waldburg. It is located in a brand new building with convenient parking. Currently the market has your standard convenience store fare along with a growing craft beer selection and wine rack. This is some good news for Victorian District residents looking for something close to stop in and for beverage or snack without having to venture too far or grab something on the go.
